Background
Potash fertilizers, the main source of potassium, are a cornerstone of modern agriculture, playing a crucial role in accelerating crop growth, improving crop quality and ensuring global food security. As an essential macronutrient, potassium provides efficient transport of water, nutrients and carbohydrates in plant tissues, contributing to optimal plant quality and productivity. The challenge is to utilize these benefits in a sustainable manner. Achieving this balance is critical to meeting the growing global demand for food while preserving our environmental resources for future generations.
Empty fruit Bunch (EFB), as well as other oilcake left over after Crude Palm Oil (CPO) extraction, are still a problem for the palm oil industry in Indonesia and Malaysia.
They are sources of environmental pollution and greenhouse gases, but remain a potentially valuable raw material for energy and potash production, including potassium fertilizers.
Market
The global potash fertilizer market size was around USD 60.45 billion in 2023, it is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2024 to 2032 and reach USD 90.49 billion by the latter year.
Feedstock and products
In Indonesia and Malaysia, palm oil mills produce several tens of millions of tons of EFO per year.
Potentially, both countries could not only meet their own potash fertilizer needs, but also export it.
Our technology can produce 100 kg or more of potassium chloride or potassium sulfate from one dry ton of EFB.
Both products are the most popular potash fertilizers.
Our solution
We have developed a highly cost-effective process for converting EFB into potassium fertilizer.
Advantages of Palm Potash:
- No costs for extraction and preparation of minerals
- EFB's disposal problem is being solved
- Expected costs are inherently lower compared to mineral sourced products
- The process is carbon neutral with zero emissions
Project implementation
The first step in implementing this project will be the creation of a pilot plant. This is not a startup, just a greenfield project aimed at the production of commodities.
We then begin to expand our potassium fertilizers production by increasing our EFB processing plants.
Key technical indicators:
- Daily/yearly processing capacity of EFB - 585 MTPD / 175500 MTPA
- Daily/yearly production capacity of potash products - 60 MTPD / 18000 MTPA
- Plant operating time during the year - 300 days
- Lifetime of plant operation - 30 years
